Castel Nuovo, often called Maschio Angioino, is a medieval castle in the city of Naples, southern Italy. It is the main symbol of the architecture of the city, and has been expanded or renovated several times since it was first begun in 1279. Before the accession of Carlo I of Anjou to the throne in 1266, the capital of the Kingdom of Naples was Palermo. There was a royal residence in Naples, at the Castel Capuano. However, when the capital was moved to Naples, Charles ordered a new castle, not far from the sea, built to house the court. Even the Mayans built pyramids -- for other reasons than the Egyptians, but pyramids nonetheless. This is fascinating since the two are miles and miles away from each other. Chichen Itza is a majestic Mayan archaeological site. The name literally means "at the edge of the Itza's well," inspired by the fact that fresh water runs underground this arid region. [Source]

There are many species of big cat that are classified as endangered. The Amur leopard (Panthera Pardus Orientalis) will almost certainly be the first of these to become extinct. This subspecies can only be found in the snowy forests of Eastern Russia. When researchers last conducted a census of the population, only 20 animals were found. [Source]

The Chinese giant salamander is the largest amphibian on Earth, and can grow up to an impressive 6 feet. It was once extremely common throughout Southern and central China, but its popularity as a food source has led to greatly diminished numbers. It is impossible to know how many Chinese giant salamanders are left in the wild, but it is categorized as being critically endangered. [Source]

At this point some people are going to be looking a little puzzled – isn’t the dodo already extinct? The little dodo bird is actually a distant cousin of the dodo that most people are familiar with. It also goes by the name “tooth billed pigeon”. There are believed to only be a few hundred little dodo birds left on two islands in Samoa. Its link with the famously extinct Mauritian dodo makes conservationists particularly keen to preserve this species. [Source]

The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. There are few roads into the Cinque Terre towns that are accessible by car, and the one into Vernazza in particular is now open (June 2012 - but very narrow at many repair spots) to a parking area leading to a 1/2 mile walk to town after the October 2011 storm damage. It is best to plan not to travel by car at all but to park at La Spezia, for instance, and take the trains. [Wiki]

Boca Raton Town Hall is designed in the Mission Style. The building has an irregular floor plan with one and two story elements featuring low pitched hip and gabled roofs with barrel tile. The two story section is topped by a domed decorative bell tower. [Source]

If anyone can do justice to Goliath’s severed head dangling from a lock of hair in David’s grasp, that someone is Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
