A picture from the Gulf of Alaska that has been making the rounds on the Internet for the last few years -- though particularly in recent weeks -- shows a strange natural phenomenon that occurs when heavy, sediment-laden water from glacial valleys and rivers pours into the open ocean. There in the gulf, the two types of water run into each other, a light, almost electric blue merging with a darker slate-blue. [Source]

Dun Briste, an impressive sea-stack, estimated to be approximately 50 metres in height, stands 80 metres off Downpatrick Head, in the town-land of Knockaun, east of Ballycastle, Co. Mayo. The cliffs in the area, including the stack, were formed in the Lower Carboniferous period, a geological term applied to a time c. 350 million years ago, when the sea temperatures around Ireland were much higher than today. Positano was a port of the Amalfi Republic in medieval times, and prospered during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. By the mid-nineteenth century, however, the town had fallen on hard times. More than half the population emigrated, mostly to Australia. [Source]

Believe it or not, a jellyfish can be a bigger threat to a human than the infinitely scarier looking shark. Specifically, it is the box jellyfish that poses the greatest threat to humans. This sea creatures has a body no bigger than a salad bowl but its tentacles can reach up to 15 feet long, and it can have up to 60 of them. Every tentacle contains enough toxin to kill around 50 adult humans. Over the last century, thousands of deaths have been attributed to this deadly animal. [Source]

There are a number of whale species that are giving conservationists cause for concern, but the most endangered is believed to be the Northern right whale (Eubalena Glacialis). The clue to its near extinction can be found in its name. In the early nineteenth century, when whales were commonly hunted to create whale oil, this species was believed to be the “right” type of whale to kill. [Source]

At an estimated population of 25,000, its numbers are far greater than many of the other species in this top 10. But only 20 years ago the population was around 5 times greater. This decline is attributed to illegal hunting and the problem with eggs being poached. There has also been a significant decline in its natural habitat, which is contributing to the issue. [Source]

The Whitsunday Islands are a collection of continental islands of various sizes off the central coast of Queensland, Australia.
