Doorwerth Castle was known, in earlier times, as Dorenweerd Castle. The present spelling of its name dates from around 1800. The first, probably wooden, castle is first mentioned in 1260 when it was besieged and burned to the ground as a result. The castle was rebuilt then left in ruins 2 more times. The castle suffered heavily in 1944 when it was transformed into a cheerless ruin as a result of German destructiveness and Allied shelling. [Source]
